Snake Sexing

In certain situations, knowing the sex of your snake is important—particularly if you plan to house multiple snakes together or are considering breeding. There are several methods used to determine a snake’s sex, including examining anal spurs on certain species, tail shape or length, “popping,” and probing.

Probing is the preferred method among experienced snake keepers. This involves gently inserting a small metal rod (probe) into the snake’s cloaca to determine its sex based on the depth reached.

Important: You must not attempt to probe a snake unless you have been properly trained, as improper technique can seriously injure the snake.
